- The engaging village of Candlewood in 1840s New York provides a glimpse into the past that will inspire and uplift today’s readers. Fifty-one-year-old Emma Garrett runs Hill House, a boardinghouse on a hill at the edge of town. Emma ministers to her guests, both the transient and those who call Hill House home. Gifted with an uncanny ability to see the unique strengths of her guests, Emma serves and challenges them with homespun wisdom and absolute faith in God. When eighty-year-old Widow Leonard shows up at Hill House to escape a heated land dispute between her two sons, Emma welcomes her and tries to help her heal the family feud. But tragedy soon hits closer to home when Emma’s very ownership of Hill House is called into question!

“This tells part of the story of a widow who runs a guest house in Candlewood, New York State in the 1840’s, her guests, family, friends and staff . It is partly about rather stubborn men, and mostly about the wonderfully drawn female characters who are affected by them ,and their determination and friendship. The main character asks God for guidance quite a lot as she is having to deal with several problems, some of which she is unable to share with anyone else, so there is Christianity here in her thoughts, but not otherwise . As another reviewer pointed out it is similar in some ways to Cranford & is equally enjoyable but easier to read. I will definitely be reading more of this series.” By Maria
“This is definitely one of those books you would sit down to with a mug of hot chocolate on a cosy winters night. It was the first book I read on my kindle and was immediately drawn into the story…you can just imagine this lovely guest house on a hill and the town below it. I couldn’t put it down.” By Angel
